Community Services

Our on-reserve facilities include a new Band Office, a Group Home, a Day Care, a Health Resource Centre, Child & Family Services, N/K to Grade 9 School, an arena, Aboriginal Head Start, a Youth/Fitness Drop-in Centre, a Fishing Station, Water Treatment Plant, Band Garage, Elders’ Lodge, Radio Station, and a Fire Hall. Medical Services Branch provides a Nursing Station. Government Services provides and maintains a local airport.

Postal Service

Air mail is delivered Monday to Friday to the community via Northway Aviation. There is a post office at the Northern store.

Fire Protection

The First Nation has a fire truck and a volunteer fire department. The band has a Fire Chief on staff. All volunteers compete in Regional Firefighting Competitions.

Communication

The community receives radio broadcast signals from Winnipeg, and the Native Communication Network, Winnipeg as well as 94.3 FM on a local radio dial and CBC FM. Most homes have their own private Bell Express Vu, RCA & Shaw Direct satellite dishes for telephone communication; a microwave satellite dish is used by Manitoba Telephone System to offer telephone (microwave) services. Internet services are provided by B and B Networks.

Water / Treatment System

The community is serviced by a completely operational piped water distribution system and obtains its water from the Poplar River. The water treatment plant was officially opened in April 2000. Some homes still have holding tanks where the piped system is not available. For those homes with holding tanks, water is distributed by water truck on a daily basis. The Water Treatment Plant employs a full time Water Treatment Plant Operator and an assistant Water Treatment Plant Operator.

Sewage System/Garbage Disposal

The community has a sewage treatment plant and maintains a landfill site.

Hydro Service

The community receives landline hydro service from Manitoba Hydro.

Health Care

The centre provides health promotion and educational services and generally informs the community about any health issues. Its primary focus is on community wellness and prevention. It provides in-house program activities to promote wellness for the band membership. The centre also has a Fitness Centre, and a community resources library (books/videos, pamphlets), a community kitchen, a parenting support group, a diabetes support group and prenatal sessions. AA meetings are held on a weekly basis.

The local nursing station provides a Northern Patient Transportation Unit which is available for all residents. It allows for medical / dental appointments in Winnipeg with travel and accommodations included. Health services provided include Dental visits - once a month, Physiotherapist - once a month, Family Physician -twice a month, Optometrist - twice a year, Ophthalmologists - once a year, Podiatrist - once a year.

Policing

imageA new RCMP detachment was opened in 2009. RCMP services are provided by the Manitoba East District. There are four officers stationed in the community. The detachment includes a duplex and two bungalows.
